Everybody Hates Chris: Chris Brown Reminds Us Why We Hate ... Chris Brown? /

When rumors started to surface about Rihanna featuring Chris Brown on her song Birthday Cake—I thought it would never happen. Well, it did. Late last night, both Chris Brown and Rihanna released remixes to their latest songs: Rihanna—Birthday Cake and Chris Brown—Turn Up the Music—and both Brown and Rihanna had the guts to feature each other on their latest tracks, even after Rihanna’s face was disfigured by Brown during a 2009 domestic dispute.
Truthfully, I could care less about Chris Brown’s appearance on Rihanna’s song; however Rihanna’s appearance on Brown’s song could very well end up backfiring on her. So many people flocked to Rihanna when they saw her bruised and battered face back in 2009. People wanted to show their consolation and as a result bought her records—radio stations began spinning her tracks just a little more than they used to. Let’s face it; Rih Rih’s career got new life breathed into it after that unfortunate incident. So many people began hating Chris Brown for Rihanna, despite not knowing what really happened that night after the Grammys. I understand how those same people now feel betrayed by the pop star. I, too, felt bad for Rihanna at the time, but the difference between me and many of the singer’s fans is that I never hated Chris Brown. In my eyes the incident was a personal dispute that played out in public. It was ill-fated, but it still didn’t take away from the extraordinary talent that Chris Brown has—therefore, I didn’t judge him.
Brown’s situation may be a little better than Rih’s, but not that much. I mean Chris, you just came out of a career slump. Your image had been tarnished for so long because of this Rihanna situation. Watching your numerous appearances in that L.A. courtroom caused many to label you ‘the villain.’ Just recently, you managed to shake that image—you snagged a Grammy and your album is one of the most anticipated of the year. You asked for forgiveness and the public gave it to you. Why on earth would you want to remind us of that horrible night by appearing on your “victim’s” song? This morning, the image of Rihanna’s disfigured face dominated the news and the blogesphere—reminding the world of why we hate Chris Brown.
