Baby Sharn Strikes Gold With "Keep D.C. Alive" /
After years on the D.C. rap scene, rapper Baby Sharn has finally found her niche with what will surely become a DMV anthem. The D.C. native teamed up with super producer Judah for her latest single, Keep D.C. Alive—a lyrical exposé documenting the woes of Washington, D.C. From the sound of it, one would think that Sharn’s latest track is a depressing mash-up of everything wrong in the world, and though she speaks candidly about the events of 9/11 being “tattooed" on her heart, this is no downer track—in fact, it’s the complete opposite. The song’s stomp-the-yard chanting captures an essence of inspiration—almost like an Obama campaign rally put on wax—because even though Baby Sharn confronts some tough issues like the AIDS epidemic and poverty, her lyrics reassure us that better days are still to come. We’d like to see more D.C. rappers jump on Baby Sharn’s bandwagon—quit rapping about “money, cars and bitches,” and bring poetry back to hip hop. After listening to this track, there is no doubt that Baby Sharn has staying power … what she plans to do with it, we don’t know. But one thing is for sure—we’re willing to stick around and see.
