2011 BET Awards: Kevin Hart Hosts, Chris Brown Leads And Trina Gets Snubbed /
So, early in the A.M., a press release came blasting through my Blackberry and I was pleasantly surprised at what I saw--BET's biggest night would be hosted by America's funny man, Kevin Hart. The list of this year's BET Award nominees definitely has its highs, but unfortunately there are an equal number of lows. We were happy to see that Chris Brown led the pack of nominees with a whopping six nominations, including Best Male R&B and Video of the Year. After a rocky two years, we're happy to see Brown back on top. Following Chris Brown, is Lil' Wayne with an impressive five nominations (no qualms with that), while Kanye West, Drake and Rihanna pull up his rear with four nods each. Despite the loss of one of their members (M-Bone was gunned down earlier this week), the CaliSwag boys are nominated in the category for Best Group.
Now, here is where things get a little sticky-- R&B diva Beyonce is nominated in the category for Best Female R&B, even though she hasn't released an album since 2009's I AM ... Sasha Fierce. Mind you, this is the same artist who, along with husband Jay-Z, refused to attend last year's award ceremony because of their objection to Chris Brown's invite. It seems like BET is courting the Carters at the expense of other talented artists whom otherwise would have been nominated (Keyshia Cole). Let's just see if hip hop's royal couple grace the red carpet this year ...
Then there is the category of Best Female Hip Hop-- no shade, but I know BET must be furious at themselves for replacing hip hop crooner, Trina with Lola Monroe--a video girl turned rapper. Immediately following the release of the nominees, Trina took to her twitter--tweeting "F**K BET." Besides the occassional HUH?'s, this year's list of nominees is impressive--we can’t wait until the show airs.
The BET Awards will air on BET, Sunday, June 26
